The Waltham Mechanical Hub project aims to establish a central maintenance facility for locomotives, passenger carriages, and wagons in Christchurch’s Waltham yard, enhancing South Island operations. By consolidating KiwiRail staff and incorporating specialised equipment, the hub will support the integration of new low-emissions locomotives and overall operational resilience, funded through the Crown Infrastructure Partners Shovel-Ready Fund and recent budgets.

The newly opened facility employs smart technology for efficient servicing, maintenance, and cleaning of Coastal Pacific and TranzAlpine train carriages, ensuring they’re primed for their next journey

Spanning 9,200 square meters, the structure will accommodate 25 maintenance berths, along with advanced rail maintenance tools including an underfloor wheel lathe, a wheelset drop table, and locomotive axle weigh systems. Additionally, the hub will host twenty-four office-based personnel, providing essential support for the maintenance operations.
